Zach Zimmermann is a DKP Implementation Lead. He brings both classroom experience and system-level perspective to his work with the DKP. He taught 8th Grade Civics in Boston Public Schools for just under a decade and has collaborated with the Democratic Knowledge Project since 2018. In that capacity, he piloted the DKP’s “Civic Engagement in Our Democracy Eighth Grade Curriculum” and contributed to revising the curriculum to incorporate feedback from teachers. In addition, Zach served as a “Civics Pathways Teacher Leader” with DESE, collaborating with educators and state leaders to design and facilitate professional development for civics teachers. He also has trained educators in inquiry-based pedagogy in collaboration with Eleanor Duckworth and Lisa Schneier at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Prior to his work in the classroom, he received a Fulbright Grant and served as a visiting lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand School of Education in South Africa. He also worked in management consulting, supporting public sector clients including the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Zach’s work is grounded in the belief that civic education should empower students to think critically, question systems, and act with purpose. He sees the classroom as a space where students not only build foundational knowledge but also confront complex questions about power, justice, and their place in shaping their communities. He holds a BA from Boston College and an Ed.M. from Harvard Graduate School of Education.
